Worries have been looming around for few weeks. It's not because I will start work soon, nor that because I will need to adapt to a new environment, but because of an unsolved question. At this starting moment of life, I can't avoid to search the answer or answers. Trying hard and yet failing for so many times in the past means that I need to try harder to fill this cordial hole, by inspecting every life aspects, setting life targets and planning life schedule.
Time, money, career, relations, health, needs, wants, responsibilities, knowledge, experience, exposure...I'm going to get overwhelmed but I will keep looking for a better answer, a better path.
Time to go for last morning jog in NTU.
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ Welcome! 欢迎!@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
Welcome to my virtual home. This is a little private space for me to put my thoughts and share my feelings since 2005. Due to my wide range of interests, there are perhaps too many tags. I would explain some of the less obvious tags:
"About Life" is really about how I have been pondering about life and what enlightenments and paradigm shifts I had experienced.
"About Psi" contains most topics about happiness, optimism vs pessimism,
confidence, comparison, pride and prejudice and other psychological aspects.
"About Logical Thinking" is about my own way of interpretating and explaining
certain issues, aiming to debunk (or create?) superficialness of them.
"About Ideology" is about my thoughts on big concepts like freedom, justice,
fairness in society and religion.
"About Society" is more about my observations about the society, often through interactions with different peoples.
"My Country" reveals my frustration, critics and hope
on my homeland - Malaysia.
"My Little Pieces" has more short posts though mostly are written in Mandarin.
While I do have some posts on book reviews and business, I am planning to
separate them into author-specific and content-specific blogs. Stay tuned.
Enjoy your reading!

Free or busy
Either you are free until mad, or you are busy until mad. It's quite lucky not getting either one. Thursday, I've just got an option to find accommodation now instead of finding it after coming back from US. Friday, I've just got my medical report from my company and hence can proceed to apply for employment pass. Saturday, I've just got decision from my father that my mum and my sis can stay one more night during my convocation.
And hence, next week, suddenly, I need to get all these things done:
1. Sourcing and getting a house unit.
2. Renew my passport.
3. Apply for employment pass.
4. Apply for international driving permit.
5. Discussion regarding relocation benefits.
6. Getting convocation suit and letter of invitation.
7. Sourcing and booking a hotel.
8. Adding one more day of travel itinerary.
9. Buying return tickets to hometown.
I am expecting a heavy consumption of money, time and energy, and of course, reduced possible staying period back hometown. I hope I can get these done well, at the expense of some of my personal works: contacting friends, blogging, photos arranging, data and info classification, last bit of entertainment and bla bla bla...
Holiday? Ha ha.

DoTA
I wanna crap on this, because I think this game alone took up most of the times that I spent on computer games these four years, just like most of us. But no one will be that lame to wrap up like me. :)
Everyone more or less have a bit of heroism, especially in the virtual realm of gaming. Before the fascinating DoTA, there were few similar maps popular like HeroArena, 3 Corridor. In fact, seniors had a strong team in 3 Corridor. After its emergence, DoTA quickly overshadowed the rest because of its unique hero skills, spells and combinations, and game balance. It brings up the joy of hero killing by blasting dumb and exaggerating sounds. It may sound stupid but deep down player's heart, it contributes to most of the pride and satisfaction one wants in gaming. As simple as that.
*Please read with caution because the following paragraphs contain self boasting of the author that may make you feel uneasy or nausea. Any illness caused is deeply regretted.
Chapter 1: Voyagers to a new land
DoTA wasn't popular at first. (Is that true for every game?) At the time wei wah introduced this map to our circle it wasn't really known among NTU students. And so we (wei wah, boon keat, lit ting, ccc and me) wandered into this new land and started to explore. Somehow I adapted to this map quickly. Maybe because it allowed me to play in my own cunning way. For the first two days, me and ccc could play against the rest of three and still won most of the matches. I've turned Bounty Hunter into a killing machine and Night Stalker into a walking nightmare for others. Of course, this only lasted for two days.
We started to play more often as a team and went to massacre noobs in NTUBnet. There was a NTU ESport Competition and we decided to give it a go. Our team name was "iAM", and my nick was "iAMstupid". For 3 weeks we trained day and night (day was night and night was day as far as sleeping concerned) and won the champion relatively easy. Only the final match was a tough battle. And we won the IG's medal too. Competition wasn't that stiff as not too many people had played that much to develop the skills and team work. Strategies adopted that time weren't as abundant as what exists for today. Our combo of maximizing AOE spell (double stun and double wave) worked pretty well.
The first year of NTU I spent about an average of two games per day perhaps. Without others being as mad as us, as voyagers to a new land, we were pretty successful. Of course winning trophies were great, but the root of the happiness lied in the good spirit and co-operation between members and the feeling of togetherness. I guessed that's the major reason why we play team games.
Chapter 2: Inhabitant of a desert island
At the top of my game, I suddenly decided to stop my addiction and let go. I realized I need more time for other aspects in my life like studies. I was very lucky that my grades weren't affected in the first year because most of the contents were learnt during STPM. Also, there were more and more people getting mad on this and it's just a matter of time before they becoming more skillful than us. It's too time consuming to maintain the level that I were at.
I didn't stop it slowly but abruptly. From the perspective of gaming, in some way it's like pulling out from the voyager's team and isolating myself in a desert island, without any connection to the game and unaware of any updates or changes. I played countable matches whenever I back to ipoh with my rubber gang members, and though I didn't play during normal days, I were still able to bully them. Haha.
Chapter 3: Return to the homeland
But after one and a half year, I finally came back. Not that I could still play competitive games since I was disconnected to this for so long but occasionally I played for the sake of revoking my skills and memories.
Moreover, I realized more of the need of using it to destress as life's getting tougher. Maybe I was influenced by someone else or I am the one who influences others or maybe both exists and strengthes each other, a new gang of dota "kaki" was formed informally which include me, Bee, Eddie, Kamen, HY, Xandra, Wen Keat, Jee Voon, ZF, Luke, KW, sometimes Ka Hong, JiaVei and a partial but special member: Teng Hooi (He's special because he got most of my exposures, knowledges to DoTA but lacks practical ability). We seldom played "VS" matches among players because it consumed too much energy. We prefered to play against "hard" but predictable AI computers.
Why is it called Homeland? It's because I used to play game. Most of us grown up playing different games. How far can we disconnected ourselves to games esp. PC games? Not too far. Some of us already said that they could not imagine giving up gaming in the future. Of course we should not be too addicted into it, but occassional short addiction seems like do more good than harm. The problem lies in how to control the degree. I have to admit that I am actually very weak against temptation, that's why I need to isolate myself from being exposed to it.
So, how long will DoTA remain popular? I think it will be quite long. Even nowadays people still play Starcraft and CS. Learning a game needs a lot of time too. So most likely, I will still play some dota matches in the future, although it will become lesser and lesser in the future.
By the way, I've just finished two VS matches from 12 to 2am. Played like shit and won none, so bad. LOL

Last bit of thoughts -- as a student
I had my last exam at Tuesday and I will not have any more at least for the next few years. It's the end of school life. I had a short moment of joy followed by a long period of contemplation. Although I have 3 months before starting to work, I need to settle few things quickly first before enjoying the holiday.
I had packed most of my stuffs and prepared to move out straight after final FYP presentation. Besides that, I have to pay library fines, return things borrowed from others, keep a list of things that I passed to others to keep, duplicate mail-box key for future mails, enable hand phone roaming, and plan for my graduation trip!
I haven't gone back to my home for really long time. Not to forget spending the last good times with friends and keeping their contacts.
And I shall not repeat the mistake of not planning ahead for my work, career and future. I had already suffered the consequences of not preparing in advance for my IA and FYP.
So though it seems that 3 months are long, it's challenging to schedule it nicely for the right balance. No longer could I wait for things to happen and take it when it comes. For a meaningful end to these 4 years and for a bright start of future, I need to plan it ahead of time.
It's time to feel sad, because it's going to end.
It's time to plan ahead, because it's going to start.
It's time to grow strong, because it's going to start.
What if I could stay as a student and continue to enjoy life? It's not possible as time keeps moving. It's not meaningful either as life isn't just about this. The objective of being a student is not to remain as a student. Of course I will miss uni's life, just like how I miss other past events, but I had enjoyed it most of the time so I don't regret leaving it. By the way, could anyone stay?
Life just begins to unfold. Loooooook backward... to look forward.

Fear
This is the first time I got so many helps from others in my studies. In wireless, I got a nice prof that offers me re-take of CA; in VHDL I got a nice prof who is very linear; in RF, I got nice friends that lend their CA answers for me to copy; in ENS, I got nice group members to work with; in Embedded, I asked Yip Kuan for favours so many times. But yet, I struggles to motivate myself to study.
Maybe my source of motivation is still there, but it is greatly overshadowed by FEAR. The fear of not doing well in exam. How a person, not attending lectures for whole semester, left with 4 days to study for 3 subjects, still can do well in exam? I don't think I'm that smart. And my last sem's results weren't that encouraging to suggest that I can pass this challenge.
Arsenal's playing now. By right I should be watching. And yet I am not in mood to do anything, not even in mood to slack. I'm terrified now. These few days I don't think I will be sleeping well. The only thing I can rely now, is my fear.
Isn't fear the greatest source of motivation?

Fight for exams?
Today morning I will have my first exam for ENS (Engineers and Society) but I have yet to finish my studies. Too many things to be memorized.
My mind is full and so can't intake any more. I went to check my web mail and received an interesting email about my missed CA.
I missed my wireless CA and subject prof wanted to give a re-test for absentee yesterday, provided a valid proof to justify absence is there. I didn't have one (because I overslept after mid-night burning) and I sent an email to ask whether can I take it without proof. The prof sent another email to all, restated the need for valid proof. So I assumed that I weren't eligible for the re-test since he didn't reply my email personally.
After the re-test he noticed I didn't take it and he replied my email and asked me to go for a re-test today. Although without any valid proof, he considers to let me take the re-test with some mark deductions as a penalty. He said :"It's waste for you to get 0 marks for CA2 since you got 10 marks for CA1."
What a nice prof! I really appreciates his efforts and concerns for students. Sadly I will be having exam today. Things took a turn a bit too late. Nonetheless, the boost gave to me from this event couldn't be greater. I am inspired to get the rest of 80 in the final. Haha, the mission of rushing course materials in few days and doing well in exam is quite unlikely but I shall keep the confidence high first.
Alas, let's fight for the first paper first.

10 reasons to skip lectures
This Friday was the day where the "last lecture" was conducted, which symbolized the end of a student's life. My "last lecture" is a bit different with others as it was conducted probably one or two months ago.
We usually summarize things towards the end of something. Throughout these 4 years, I think I have improved my consistency. Where was it? In skipping lectures. :)
- First year: Didn't attend 99.99% (can't say 100% though) of lectures in Sem 2 due to dota practices, activities and catching up in studies.
- Second year: Attended 70% of the lectures via lecture recording.
- Third year: Attended 50% of the lectures during exchange programme, of which 80% of time spent fishing.
- Final year: Didn't attend lectures since week X.
Why am I so keen to skip lectures? Here are my top 10 reasons of skipping lectures:
*Please don't read it if you are a good student as it is potentially hazardous to you.
1. Trapped in a dream in early morning unconsciously.
2. Staying up late consciously.
3. There are only morning classes in a day.
4. There are not only morning classes, but it's better to be consistent.
5. Sacrificed for activities, assignments and discussions.
6. It's better away than late.
7. Sleeping in room is better than sleeping in lectures.
8. There are lecture recordings.
9. Lecturers don't know how to teach.
10. Studying notes before going lectures makes you understand no more than what are inside notes, not studying notes before going lectures makes you understand nothing.
Your reason? :)

NTU New HSS Library
Today I decided to give myself a day off and immense myself in library. Although from my point of view, there shouldn't been a clear line between normal day or day off as undergraduates are supposed to be free to choose going to school or not, as long as they take responsibilities of their own actions.
I haven't been to HSS library for long time. In year 2 occasionally I went there to read books in intervals between lectures. One time a senior was so surprised to see me there reading a serious book and handed me a book of the title "a studies on Cantonese foul words" instead. A mix feeling of funny and sad.
Last time there were mix collections of Chinese and English books. Now this library has changed to HSS-Chinese library, with all the English books been shifted to a new HSS-English library. Last time I only red Chinese books but this time round I want to read English one, so I have to go and locate this new HSS library at s3-b4c.
It has just been opened I guess.

Last Battle 04
My mood wasn't right to write report so I've decided to give myself a break. I slept at yesterday evening, woke up to play 2 dota matches. After that I felt very hungry and called McD delivery, sharing the delivering cost with chak hon and boon keat. Went to hon's room to eat and ... played PS2 fighting game with him till today morning.
I woke up at about 1pm today and my mood still wasn't right to write report so I've decided to clean my room. The idea of turning the giant cupboard 90 degrees to face the window just popped up from my mind. There wasn't any concrete reason behind it, I just need a distinctively different space to live. I guessed I need to totally separate myself from things related to my lovely FYP.
Hence I spent few hours to organize my stuffs (books, foods and utensils), clean my room (fan and floor) and do things that I kept forgetting like digging out the hard-disk warranty card that ahbee want, digging out my Popular card that are still valid back to my wallet and so on.
With dusts cleared, the fan is now lighter, the floor is now smoother, and of course, what is more important is that my mind is now fresher.
Let's zero in to report writing.

Last Battle 03
I had been over optimistic. Road becomes narrow and uneven after the initial great turn. Two days are not enough to achieve what my prof wants. My frustration brewed and I had to stop and diverted into my own way. Although this result is definitely not what my prof wants but nonetheless it's acceptable from moderator's point of view, I guess.
Similar to the time that I rushed my first draft in 2 days times, now I have 2 days left to rush my final report. With new results, observations and explanations, I am actually like re-writing the report again. The difference is, this time the climax will be much more scintillating, namely "Crazy Monday" featuring report submission, company interview and ENS presentation.
But I am already so tired of fighting.

疲倦还要奋斗 难受

你别想 逃走
Who can set me free?
Who can bring me home?

Last battle - 02
Finally I smell victory for the very first time. Today managed to get the correct compensation network and critically damned (oh sorry damped) the system. So now the transient load response is about 10us which is comparable to the market's one.
I thought I may need more time to get this right but somehow lucks stood behind me today. In the contrary, what I considered the lesser step - putting the same compensation network to current mode error amp, turned out to be much more difficult. Hence another scenario to conquer.
Got back the draft from my dear prof. Not many comments were given by him as he was more interested to know the progress. I told him that all results and explanations will have to be changed and briefly explained to him my current situation. He seemed to be OK though I could sense that he didn't have much confidence in me to achieve the result that he really want. As for the moderator, he reminded me not to take things for granted.
I guess now my grade will mostly depend on the final report. I could guess where he set the standard, it should be close to perfection. He's an enthusiastic perfectionist. In some way, I belong to the same class.
The hope carries on!

Last battle - 01
At Saturday I spent half day running simulation to improve load transient response. It was tougher than what I had expected so I need to spend a bit of time on reading as tuning parameter didn't work.
Today I spent half day revising theories on system stabilities and manage to get few ideas to try out tomorrow.
Why I spent only two half days? I think it's normal to tone down a bit after a high. The rest of the time I've spent on napping, chit-chatting, net surfing and went to Seng Siong to refill my food supplies.
I don't know why my memories easily come back to me whenever I go super market. When I choose fruits I recall the time that I stood behind my mother when she was choosing fruits every weekend, when I see vanhotten chocolates in 4 pieces packet I recall the time that I always bought this from my neighbourhood grocery store 志生堂 when I was young, when I see soya milk and chocolate cheese I recall my exchange life at CUHK, when I see Korean Choco Pie I recall the time that I spent with Korean friends during exchange, when I see snacks I recall the time that I was choosing snacks with IA colleagues in supermarket to refill snacks in office during lunch hour. Worst thing is, when I saw this yesterday at SengSiong:
Suddenly my mouth was filled with the taste of the delicious sauce/soup of mix vegetables and meats that were used to be cooked with this clam, by my father of course. We call this clam 鲍鱼菇. I haven't eaten this for almost 4 years le leh... Haiz... I am getting a bit home-sick.
If not for this bloody battle I would have gone back to my home long time ago. After this battle, no matter what, I will go back to my home to rest.

When doom are turned into hope
Today spent almost half day troubleshooting my system, under the guide and aid from Ah Cheong. We went through topology and connection checking, re-configured the compensation network, dealt with the convergence problem and finally managed to put the system back on the right track, and delivered the results that are reasonable and explainable.
So it means that my previous set-up was a real garbage. As I couldn't solve the convergence problem, I opted to change the connection and topology. Amazingly, the problem solved but it's all but the beginning of a dead-end path. Things were messed up and project went stagnant for quite long. On the verge of giving up, somehow we managed to scrape through by "forcing" the output that we want. But it's of no use at all, it just gave the "literal" output and "pseudo" stability, when the load changes a bit, it will go haywire.
I sensed something were wrong but I couldn't really tell. When I couldn't simulate the dynamic load response according to the standard testing my hearts started to meld. I was prepared to give a last fight before the fate hits the last nail on my coffin. And now, the doom are turned into hope, although as slim as it possibly be, because I am running against the clock.
But certainly it's million times better than being hopeless. Although I just have a week more to revise previous theories, rework the parameters, redo the results and rewrite the report, I am confident I can turn the tide. I can make my report much better than now. Bring it on!
These two days I has been working continuously, sleep earlier and wake up earlier. When I woke up today by myself I know I am back. Consistency is the power. Even I has been working for the whole day now I still feel energy to keep going. Hope is the energy. I know chance comes but only once, and if I don't go all out now I will be the dumbest person in the world.
And given that the dire situation was solved in half a day, it at least assures myself that I wasn't all wrong. My understanding, my efforts. There were certain gap in between my knowledge and the way to apply it. These missing elements, if I were to continue searching on my own, will continue to be missing.
I keep bitching about my prof at today's dinner while my friends asked me not to grumble too much as there are lots more worse cases around. I may sound like I am suffering the most in the world which I know I am not, but that's just to release my emotions. Accommodating will do much better job than reasoning. In fact, I never doubt he's hard working and dedicated. I even forced myself to utter "thank you" after the half an hour of "wars of words". I know how to deal with things reasonably (most of the time), just that sometimes I also need to whine. Though I still wonder, if only he had provided those missing elements, I will now at somewhere of much greater height. I had been independent for all the way, I am not asking to be spoon fed, I just want some right guidance at the time I most needed. When I stood up against him he said I was trying to confuse him. Mix feeling.
Anyway, at this last chapter of U-life, I just need to be strong. There are lots of things coming up and cram my schedule till the end, but I am really firing on all cylinders to face it. Last semester I faced the same situation I failed to deliver, this time I shall not repeat the mistake again. One shall stand up at where he fell down. Let's keep going.
Of course, all of these, wouldn't been possible, without the most helpful hand from Ah Cheong, whose dedicated half-day efforts turned my doom into hope.
Million thanks! ^^

Craze week ends!!!
A week is as crazy as you could think of when 3 out 7 days were actually spent burning midnight oil. One day for assignment submission and CA, another for watching political blockbuster movie, and final one for rushing FYP draft with longest hours : 2am - 3pm.
And yet now I am still awake, albeit lack of energy to anything except idling and blogging.
Finally I can rest la, and spare some time to do things that I want. A lot of things to zap a... @.@

Final moments as a student
Works are piling up and I've just keyed in all my deadlines into calendar. The coming few weeks will be tough so I hope I can hold on to the bitter end. Kinda lost my momentum to pursue academic excellence since it doesn't make a difference if I am not going anywhere other than IMflash. This doesn't mean that I will become slacker as I already set sights on certain areas to improve myself before graduate.
But before that, I have to ensure that FYP can be "close cased" before deadline, and fulfill my basic responsibilities as a student to study "just enough", hehe.
Actually, it's hard to find the perfect balance in between studies, preparation to work, personal development, worries for future and enjoyment of final moments of Uni life.

A prosperous New Year
It's friday night! It's all about gathering, cards, gxxblxxx, cookies and wines! I acted like cai shen yeh and gave away so many ... for many rounds of white knave, and when luck evened themselves out, I magically recovered and made them paid for greediness by a 5 cards-21 points-triple. ^^ Happy prosperous New Year.

Shiraz from Yellow tail was good but Riesling from south Australia sucks...no next time.
